When I was looking at how to get high-quality grass-fed meats to my home I was hard-pressed to find any good deals from the farmers’ markets. Instead, I chose to look into ButcherBox and almost 3 years later I am still receiving a box monthly with the best beef, pork, and chicken. So, how much does ButcherBox cost?

The standard box from ButcherBox comes in at $129 but there are options for each month or every other month. You can increase your costs and actually receive double the meat in each box, the cost doesn’t change based on your meat preference choice though.

I would say that it is a very good cost when you look at the overall ability to get quality raised animal meat and not the candy fed crap that exists today overall in the world.

When I started the ketogenic diet there was a promise to myself to work on purchasing better quality foods for myself and my family.

What I found out is that the farmers’ markets near me frequently were hit or miss with any specific meat cuts I was interested in and that unless I was very early many times they would be sold out by the time I could get there.

Is Butcher Box Worth the Price?

Then I found ButcherBox and their team of small farmers. My friend had recently ordered the Butcher Box with a mix of all 3 types of meat: beef, chicken, and pork. He raved on and on about the pork sausage and the bacon he had received. I decided at that point that I would give them a try.

ButcherBox has been amazing for my family and I to have quality meats delivered monthly for nearly no cost difference but a much larger quality difference from the store.

How Does ButcherBox Work?

ButcherBox features exclusively 100% Grass Fed/Grass Finished Beef, Organic Chicken & Heritage Breed Pork. If you haven’t had heritage pork before you will fall in love with the taste and texture. I don’t ever eat any other pork if I can help it!

I would suggest going with the mixed box as your first shipment and then possibly migrate to the custom for a more specific selection to receive.

Mixed Box (Beef, Chicken And Pork)

Includes 8 1/2 to 11 lbs of meats from a mix of different cuts and animals. This is the default and most commonly ordered box from ButcherBox and will work for almost anyone looking to get started.

I have been on this one a majority of my time while on the service. I like the variety and ability to look and find matching recipes to compliment the meats.

Beef And Chicken

This is situated towards the people who aren’t interested in pork products, this could be the box for you if you enjoy Crossfit and workouts and are looking for lean cuts of meat. I would recommend starting here if that’s your flow and then moving to custom later to align your box to your exact needs.

Beef And Pork

These are definitely the more fatty cuts of meat and not aimed at those looking to skimp on their fat intake. I would love to order this box but my wife is a chicken fan so we stuck to custom or mixed boxes 99% of the time we have ordered.

All Beef

This is the Carnivores dream box, especially since most stick to a predominantly beef meal plan. This is the one Shawn Baker more than likely orders. I like more variety to my dishes and the ability to try different meats on different days will keep me away from choosing this option.

Custom Box

This one is where it is at, you have to pay extra for the choice and selection but each box is to your liking in every way.

This is definitely the box for those who are picky in their choice of cuts and options as to the type of meats or to fit a macronutrient ratio. Definitely worth it if you want to drill down and get specific steaks, chicken, or pork selections.

How Does ButcherBox Ship? Every Month Or Every Other Month

ButcherBox has a lot of options but they dial down them to the two simple options listed below which are 24-48 servings each month or every other month.

Once A Month (24 or 48 Servings)

This is a personal preference and the more you eat in the more you should evaluate based on family size whether you need 24 or 48 servings within a month of time.

Our family sticks to the 24 servings per month as we eat around 3oz per serving so we stretch this a little further.

If you are a large family you would want to definitely look into the 48 servings to allow you the ability to feed a 3-4 person family better for the month.

You may still need to supplement with a little more from the grocery here or there depending on your meat consumption.

Every Other Month (24 or 48 Servings)

This is similar to the above but they only ship to you every other month. This means you get either 24 or 48 servings sent to you bi-monthly so this is more long-term planning of meals and knowing that you will need to supplement on occasion or eat out.

How Long Can ButcherBox Stay Outside?

Each box is carefully packaged with dry ice and an insulated box to ensure the temperature doesn’t fail while delivered and waiting for you outside.

It is expected that you would bring in the box sooner than about 6 hours, after this time frame you may start to have questions about the meat.

Should you be wondering about the viability of your delivery you will want to check it immediately yo ensure that the temperature is below 40°F as measured with a food thermometer.

Chicken

Their free-range organic chickens spend their lives roosting in barns and exploring outside.

I have supported ButcherBox now for almost three years, not once have I wavered in continuing my monthly box. I don’t know how I would find the quality of meats locally if I was to cancel this and my wife may actually kill me.

Only once has an order been missing an item and when I reached out they immediately sent me a much larger brisket in the next box which was significantly nicer than the missing steak!
